Ghizer River in Gilgit-Baltistan

Ghizer River in Gilgit-Baltistan

Ghizer River is a tributary of the Indus River, and flows past the town of Golaghmuli Valley. It is located in the Northern Areas of Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan. The Ghizer river starts from Shandur lake. The Ghizer River is also referred to as the Gilgit River.

June is hot, as always, and remains hot unless it rains here in Punjab. The suffocation indoors, the constant buzzing of fans, the tiny sparrows searching for water in the scorching heat, the coo-coo of quails; all the sights and sounds sadden me, and when the heat here makes it difficult to breathe, I suddenly miss the cool shades of Ghizer’s meadows.

Ghizer District is the westernmost part of the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. Its capital is Gahkuch. Ghizer is a crossroads between Gilgit and Chitral, and also to China and Tajikistan via the Karambar Pass through Ishkomen/Darkut Yasin (which are connected via Shandur Pass).
